Leaving LaBelle, Dolphins in Fort Myers Again

We got off to a good start around 8:30 Wednesday morning, heading west from LaBelle on the Caloosahatchee River, retracing our path back toward the Gulf of Mexico. We went through our 113th and 114th locks, the last two for a long, long time.

Franklin Lock - our 114th

Fort Myers
After we passed under the big Fort Myers bridge, a family of dolphins joined us, swimming and jumping in our wake as we traveled at about 9.5 mph. They were level with our cockpit in the wake that comes off the nose of the boat, not the stronger wake that churns from the engine. Sometimes they passed under our keel. It was WONDERFUL! I could actually see their eyes when they rolled on their sides. There were about 12 of them - a large, dark gray one, a little child, a light gray mother with a pink belly, several medium gray and a few light gray. They were the same pod of dolphins that we saw last November; I knew this because of the notch on an older fellow’s fin.  They stayed with us at least 20 minutes until we reached a channel marker. That must have been their home area. I visited with them the whole time, leaving Brian to drive the boat through the Fort Myers boat traffic and narrow channels. These dolphins are now the standard by which all other dolphin pods will be judged. Love it.

Gorgeous green water, sunlight, big sprays
over the bow and so many condos along the beach!
