September 18
We’re at Grafton, Illinois, with the confluence of the
Illinois River and the Mississippi River right outside our window. We are just
a few miles above St. Louis and are very lucky to be sitting here in port
because we’re having a heat wave. Yesterday it felt like 96° outside and today
it’s supposed to feel like 100° with thunderstorms. Thankfully it’s very
comfortable inside with our air conditioners running. Originally we had planned
to rent a car from Enterprise today and drive into the city, but we’ve postponed
that until tomorrow when the weather is supposed to improve.
Yesterday Brian washed the boat while I defrosted the fridge
and freezer and did the laundry. Since we had bought too many root vegetables
way back there in Sheboygan, I made a lamb stew using up the red carrots, some
of the fingerling potatoes, the last lamb chops from the freezer and a bit of
red wine. Brian loved it.
Two nights ago we watched the Republican debates on our
neighbor’s tv and last night we watched a very average movie on a DVD. Mostly I
just enjoyed doing the kind of familiar things we do at home. We’re still
reading lots of books. I’m halfway through “Huckleberry Finn” which I had
promised myself that I would read while on the Mississippi River. I can look
out my window and see the islands and trees and water that he saw, but no rafts
or steamboats.
